Snake Plush Hat — Costume Sewing Pattern & DIY Tutorial

Once you’ve decided on your size, buy the pattern and download it from the link you’ll be given after purchase.

Available sizes vary from product to product.

Print the downloaded data at “actual size” on the paper size indicated (A4 or A3).
It includes the pieces for both the snake and the dinosaur.

Please note that we cannot offer refunds for orders placed in the wrong print size.

Cut out the pattern along the cutting lines.

Overlap the tabs with matching numbers and tape them together.

If a tab overlaps a cutting line, tape the pieces together first and then cut away the rest.

Cut out the outer fabric, lining, and snake pieces needed for the Snake Plush Hat.

Fold the left edge of the fabric in half, place Outer B along the fold, and cut along the pattern.

For any pattern marked with the “fold”※ symbol, cut the fabric the same way as Outer B.

Cut out the semicircle on Outer B labeled “snake’s tail,” layer it over the fabric you just cut, and cut out the semicircle.

Finally, while still folded in half, snip along the fold.

Once it looks like the figure, Outer B is ready.

Outer A is marked “×2 (one left, one right),” so cut out 2 pieces total as mirror images.

If the pattern is marked “×1,” cut just one piece; if it’s marked “×2,” cut two of the same piece.

If it’s marked “×2 (one left, one right),” cut out 2 pieces total as mirror images.

Make holes in the pattern with an awl or similar. The holes go mainly at the “corners” and “apexes.”

For Outer A, for example, make holes at the red dots.

Layer the pattern onto the pieces you cut in step 3, and insert your pen tip through the holes you just made to mark the fabric.

Of course, if you don’t mind the extra effort, you can trace the whole pattern.

To transfer the hook-and-loop fastener placement, poke through the pattern with a pointed tool to make a small hole as a mark.

The pieces to mark are the side of Outer A “that comes to the left when worn” and Lining C.

Cut a 25 mm-wide hook-and-loop fastener to 4 cm.
We recommend rounding off the corners so it doesn’t feel scratchy.

Sew the hook-and-loop fastener onto the “right side” of the Outer A you marked in step 4-3.

As before, cut a 25 mm-wide hook-and-loop fastener to 4 cm and sew it onto the “right side” of Lining C (the chin).

Fold A-B on Outer A with right sides together※ and sew the dart※.
Basically every piece has a 1 cm seam allowance, so you can simply sew 1 cm in from the fabric edge.

In the same way, fold C-D on Outer A with right sides together and sew the dart. Once done, sew the darts on the other Outer A piece as well.

Fold a-b on the snake’s tail (top) with right sides together and sew the dart.

Layer the snake’s tail (top) and the snake’s tail (bottom) with right sides together and sew c-d-e.

Cut away the seam allowance at F(a)-f-g on the Outer B pattern, layer it on the fabric, and mark it.
Also be sure to mark the positions of F(a), f, and g.

Cut away the seam allowance on the snake’s tail (top) pattern as well, and mark it the same way as before.
Also mark the position of f.

Make snips about 7 mm long around the opening on Outer B.

Layer Outer B and the tail with right sides together and pin them in place. Pin so that the a, f, and g marks line up, then sew carefully along the line.

Layer E-g on Outer B with right sides together and sew them.

Snip between c-g and e-g on the snake’s tail (top), layer it with the snake’s tail (bottom), pin it in place, and sew c-g and e-g together.

Trim the tail’s seam allowance to about 5 mm and turn it right side out. Trimming the seam allowance gives a cleaner shape once turned right side out.

Layer Outer A and B with right sides together so the triangle parts (notches) line up, and sew from G to J.

Layer the remaining Outer A with Outer B the same way as before, and sew from G to J.

Fold K-L on Outer C with right sides together and sew the dart.

Place Outer C with its right side facing up, then place the snake’s tongue on top.

Pin it so it lines up with notch P, then fold the tongue back as shown in the figure.

Layer Lining C on top of that.
Outer C and Lining C are layered with right sides together.

Sew around Outer C and Lining C. However, leave the section between N-O unsewn.
Trim the corners at M and Q diagonally, then turn the whole thing right side out through the N-O opening.

Add stuffing through the N-O opening. Once stuffed, sew 5 mm from the N-O edge to close the opening.

Apply fabric glue to spot K on Lining C and bond the tongue piece to it.
Hold it in place with clips, and once it’s set firmly, the chin is complete.

Fold R-S on Lining A with right sides together and sew the dart.
In the same way, fold T-U with right sides together and sew the dart.
Once done, sew the darts on the other Lining A piece as well.

Layer the two Lining A pieces with right sides together and sew them.
Don’t sew the opening for adding stuffing, the “stop-stitching point”※.

Layer X-V-X on Lining A and B with right sides together and sew them.

Layer chin N-O onto the right side of Outer A (the side that comes to the right when worn) at N-O and pin it in place.

Layer the lining on top of that and sew N-O.

Layer the outer and lining with right sides together and sew E-J-C-O-N-X.
Sew the other side the same way, from E to X.

Fold the seam allowance at X to the inside, and sew X-G-Y-G-X.

First, trim the corners at N and O diagonally, then make snips about 7 mm long into the seam allowance at X.

The Outer A and Lining A patterns are marked with an “×.” Tie the two × marks together with hand-sewing thread so the lining doesn’t pop out.
Make the thread between the marks 4–5 cm long.

Reach in through the lining opening and turn the whole thing right side out.

Start by stuffing the tail. Look through the lining opening and you’ll see the opening of the tail; add stuffing until it’s slightly firm.

Add stuffing until the whole hat is firm.
If you pack too much in the center, there won’t be room for your head, so avoid the center and add it around the edges.

Fold the seam allowance of the opening at the back of the head in by 1 cm and baste it.
Sew 5 mm from the fabric edge with the sewing machine to close the opening. You may also close it by hand with a ladder stitch※ or similar.

Cut out the “nose placement” on Outer B with scissors. Use the cut-out inner part as the “nose pattern” and the outer part as the “nose placement guide.”
Layer two pieces of felt and cut along the pattern.
Feel free to change the shape and placement of the nose however you like!

Trim pattern B at a convenient spot and pin it to the hat.
Glue the felt nose on through the placement opening, and once the position is set, remove the guide.
Glue on the other side the same way and the nose is complete.

Glue on eyes made from felt, buttons, embroidery, or whatever you like. The design and placement are up to you ☆
And with that, the Snake Plush Hat is complete.
